Bottle Gourd/夕顔(ゆうがお)

Japanese Food

Bottle gourds (yuugao in Japanese) are a very popular summer vegetable in Niigata. For some reason, the people in Niigata call them you-goh (y + long “u” + g + long “o”). Bottle gourds are usually very large. The one shown in the photo is well over 30 cm in height, but it is relatively a small one.

Cross section:

I put some of it in miso soup, together with tsurumurasaki (Malabar spinach).

Some of you may know kanpyo (dried gourd shavings). Kanpyo is made from bottle gourds.
