The White House Sweet Dough Butter Cookies
   1 lb sugar
   2 lb butter
   3 lb all purpose flour
   3 eggs
   1 Tbs vanilla extract
   1 Tbs salt

I adapted this recipe and made 1/3 of the recipe.  Check out The White House post here.
   2 sticks and 6 Tbs butter at room temperature
  1.5 cups sugar
  1 egg
  3 cups and 1 Tbs flour
  1 tsp salt
  1 tsp Vanilla
1.  Beat the butter with sugar until light and fluffy
2.  Add egg, salt and vanilla.  Beat until incorporated.  Then add flour at low speed until just incorporate.
3.  Form a flat ball between 2 plastic layers.  Refrigerate overnight.
3.  The next day, preheat oven to 350 oF.  Roll the dough into 1/4 in. thick and cut out cookie shapes with cookie cutter.  Bake until the edge is golden brown 10 to 14 minutes depending on the size of cookies.  Let cool  on baking pan until cool and harden enough to transfer to cooling rack, and cookies needs to be cool completely before decoration.

Royal Icing
1  egg white (use pasturized egg if possible)
2 cups powder sugar
1 tsp lemon juice
Mix all ingredient with electric beater/paddle attached for 5 minutes.  If icing is too thick add more lemon juice or egg white.
